Chapter 22
Chapter 22
Forbidden Erosion
No one had noticed Wei Yuan had gotten down from the back. He was slowly pushing his wheelchair toward Jiang Shan, who stood there dazed.
The whole way, Jiang Shan hadn’t asked a single question. She had barely spoken—as if she was used to being withdrawn and closed off.
Now she stood in front of the fuel pump, clearly shocked by what she had seen. Still she didn’t ask. Wei Yuan didn’t offer to explain.
The way he looked at her was more like observation.
With a bang, Zhang Zheng fired at the rusted storage door.
The sound made Wei Yuan and Jiang Shan both look over.
Zhang Zheng coolly holstered the gun and was about to step inside.
“Hey.”
Everyone’s scalp tightened.
Jiang Shan had actually spoken.
She had called out to Zhang Zheng, who was about to step through the door. Hey.
Zhao Ying had already retreated to a distance, only her eyes visible as she watched.
Zhang Zheng looked at Jiang Shan. His hand went back to his waist. “Wh-what?”
Jiang Shan slowly raised her finger. Zhang Zheng’s grip on his gun tightened…
She pointed at the sign beside the door. “It says ‘No entry.’”
Everyone: “???”
Zhang Zheng frowned hard. “So?”
She looked at him and blinked, clear-eyed.
…?
Including Wei Yuan, everyone’s face was a picture of disbelief.
Jiang Shan looked utterly serious—those big eyes and earnest brows. However you looked at it, she didn’t seem to be making a deadpan joke.
Zhang Zheng said: “What the hell are you—”
Wei Yuan’s brow lowered. “Zhang Zheng.”
The rest of the curse was swallowed. But Zhang Zheng looked at Jiang Shan with pure negativity.
Wei Yuan had slowly wheeled to Jiang Shan’s side. He looked at her thoughtfully. “Would you come into the storage with me?”
She was taken aback. She looked at him without thinking.
His gaze gave nothing away—only that he was seriously asking her opinion.
But when he said it, the others were stunned. They stared at Wei Yuan in disbelief.
Jiang Shan didn’t answer for a long time. Wei Yuan said slowly: “We’re still over three hundred kilometres from the city. We have spare fuel, but if we can’t find the tools to pump it, we’ll all be stuck here.”
Like Jiang Shan had been stuck on the mountain.
She looked at them—in their strange suits, appearing out of nowhere, driving a second-hand antique truck. Why didn’t they call for help? Why no helicopter?
Jiang Shan still didn’t ask. She only gave a slight nod.
She had agreed to what Wei Yuan had asked.
A flicker passed through Wei Yuan’s eyes. He looked up at the others. “Then A-Shan and I will go down. Zhang Zheng, you stay outside and keep watch.”
